The Fox and the Crab (pg. 75)
The Hare and the Tortoise (or the Tortoise and the Hare) (pg. 96)
The Crow and the Pitcher (pg. 34)
The North Wind and the Sun (pg.109)

Let’s share our thoughts and opinions about the fables we read. They were:

The Fox and the Crab (pg. 75)
The Hare and the Tortoise (or the Tortoise and the Hare) (pg. 96)
The Crow and the Pitcher (pg. 34)
The North Wind and the Sun (pg.109)

Here are some questions to get the discussion started:

1) What is a fable?
2) What was similar about the fables?
3) Which was your favorite fable? Why did you like it?
4) These fables are very old. Do you think their advice is still helpful?
5) Do these fables remind you of any common sayings? (ex. The North Wind and the Sun =
You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.)

These are just a few questions to begin with. Please post your answers and ask your own questions.

Event Reports

Thank You! – Isesaki Board Game Night

On July 5, about 30 people gathered for JOMO JET’s Isesaki Board Game Night. For this Board Game Night, we chose an American and Canadian theme to celebrate the birthdays of the two countries (July 4th and July 1st respectively).

Independence Day for America is to celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act, 1867, which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire.

For our American and Canadian-themed Board Game Night, we introduced America’s classic treat of Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches and enjoyed Coca-Cola. For Canada, we shared maple cookies and Canada Dry ginger ale.

Thank you everyone who attended, and we hope to see you all again at our next event!

Media Circle

July English Media Circle: Aesop’s Fables!

The Fox and the Crab (pg. 75)
The Hare and the Tortoise (or the Tortoise and the Hare) (pg. 96)
The Crow and the Pitcher (pg. 34)

Aesop was a story-teller in ancient Greece. Aesop wrote many fables: short stories with simple and useful lessons. There are thousands of Aesop’s stories, and some stories’ lessons are opposite to each other, so many people now think Aesop was not a real person. However, many similar stories called The Aesopic existed in the ancient Sumer and Akkad societies over 5,000 years ago. These stories were told by mouth and not by writing, so there are many different versions of the stories.

July and Aesop: A perfect pairing!

Aesop’s fables give good advice to all people: adults and children, teenagers and grandmothers. So, we chose Aesop to start the first JOMO JET English Media Circle! During the next month we will read four of Aesop’s most famous fables. If you can’t find Aesop’s Fables at a library or a bookstore, click the links below and read the fables on the internet!

The Fox and the Crab (pg. 75)
The Hare and the Tortoise (or the Tortoise and the Hare) (pg. 96)
The Crow and the Pitcher (pg. 34)
The North Wind and the Sun (pg.109)

Then on July 16 we will share our thoughts on the JOMO JET Media Circle blog!

JOMO JET is starting a new project called the English Media Circle. This project is for people who love English media such as books or movies and want to talk about them.

At the beginning of an English Media Circle month, we will choose a book or movie to read or watch. Then, we will open an English discussion post on this website later in the month.

On the discussion post, we will have questions about the book/movie. People can comment on the post to talk about the book/movie and ask questions. ALTs will also participate in the discussion, so please talk with us!

Participation is free, and the discussion is completely online on our website. You do not need to use your real name, but you will need an account to comment on the discussion post. You can make a free WordPress account or use your Twitter or Facebook account.

Please join us for the Media Circle if you are interested in English books or movies!
